Postcards From | Berlin Pt.1

To be completely honest Berlin had never really been high on my travel bucket list. Which is strange as most people rave about the city and all that it has to offer. But I’d never been there before and didn’t have a very clear idea of what to expect, when I hopped on the bus from Bremen to Berlin.

I was hoping to get some work done on the bus (read: write some blog posts, edit pictures and watch some netflix) but the wifi was moody and to be frank I was very tired so after an hour or so, I started staring out the window while the German highway was flashing before my eyes. I arrived in Berlin just after sunset and made my way to the underground, where I bought a ticket from the most unfriendly lady I had come across so far. I counted to ten, got to where I needed to be and waited for my dear friend Suzanne to pick me up. While I was waiting in front of a glass-station I was approached by a man, offering to bring me wherever I needed to be. I smiled, thanked him and told him I was fine. Our conversation proceeded somewhat like this:

> Are you American?
< Nope, are you?
> Haha, no I’m German.
< Yeah I figured.
> How long are you staying?
< Not sure..
> …
< …
> You’re wearing strange shoes.
< Thanks, they’re my favorites.

He turned around and left into some dark alley and I was left standing there, laughing a bit unsettled because of the strange vibe this city had. Suzanne picked me up and as we walked to her apartment we talked about culture shocks and it made me think about adaptability and human nature (but I’ll spare you that rant for now ;)

I hadn’t seen Suus since we went to Sziget the summer before so we had a lot to catch up, and before we knew it we finished the wine and it was 5am. The next morning (ahem.. next afternoon) we made our way to this great vintage market, we walked around the museum island and had some coffee to keep us going. After a little while Suus had to go back to the lab and I took my time wandering around taking a few too many pictures of buildings and statues. I went back to Suus’s place, not quite sure how I felt about this city but excited to explore more in the next coming days. These are just the first bunch and there’s plenty more to come so stay tuned!
